The Science of Safe Water

Should you filter your water or purify it? We break down the microscopic science of waterborne threats and explain how different Katadyn technologies neutralize them to keep you safe on the trail.

When you are miles away from civilization, a clear, rushing mountain stream looks like the perfect place to quench your thirst. But what you can’t see can ruin your trip. Waterborne pathogens come in different sizes, and understanding the science behind them is crucial for choosing the right water treatment method.

Conservation vs. Purification

The Genetic Disruptor: UV Purification
But what happens when you travel to developing regions where waterborne viruses (like Hepatitis A or Norovirus) are a risk? Viruses are incredibly tiny—often smaller than 0.1 microns. They can slip right through standard microfilters.

This is where the SteriPEN comes in. Instead of physically removing the threat, it neutralizes it using the power of physics. The SteriPEN emits short-wavelength ultraviolet light (UV-C). When this intense light penetrates the cell walls of viruses, bacteria, and protozoa, it directly attacks their DNA. The UV-C light scrambles their genetic code, making it impossible for them to reproduce. If a pathogen cannot reproduce, it cannot make you sick.
