Katadyn Water Filter Basics and Care

Regular cleaning, correct storage and timely replacement help keep a Katadyn water filter ready for outdoor use.

Know your filter technology

Katadyn products use different technologies, including ceramic, glass fiber, hollow fiber, activated carbon and virus membrane stages. The correct cleaning and storage method depends on the model, so always use the instructions for the specific filter.

Clean according to the model

Ceramic filters can be mechanically cleaned when the product instructions allow it. Hollow fiber systems such as BeFree models are cleaned using the specified shake or swish method. Glass fiber filters and carbon elements have their own care and replacement requirements.

Store the filter correctly

Empty the filter and hoses, remove debris and allow parts to dry as required. Protect the filter from freezing, heat and impact. Keep spare cartridges and maintenance kits available when the filter is needed for longer trips or frequent use.

Replace parts before they fail

Inspect seals, handles, hoses, cartridges and connectors regularly. Use the correct spare part for the model and region. A simple maintenance record can make it easier to plan replacements and keep the filter ready.
